Mansfield Lawmakers Applaud Funding for New Mansfield Elementary School

October 2, 2020

Hartford, Conn. — State Representatives Gregg Haddad (D – Mansfield) and Brian Smith (D – Colchester, Lebanon, Mansfield, Windham) celebrate the passage of legislation authorizing over $209 million in grants for school building projects in 10 districts across the state, including $33 million for the construction of a new Mansfield Elementary School.

The House of Representatives and Senate voted on the bill during special sessions on September 30 and October 1, respectively. The bill now goes to Governor Ned Lamont for his consideration.

"It is vital to provide our students with a safe learning environment to thrive in the 21st century, but also one that fits the needs of our community. I am grateful to have the governor's and Connecticut General Assembly's support so Mansfield leaders can begin to build an energy efficient facility that will enhance the academic experience for students and school staff, while saving taxpayer dollars," said Rep. Haddad.

"Last November, Mansfield voters approved this project during referendum because they recognized the value it will bring to the community. Like many school districts across the state, Mansfield is grappling with declining enrollment and outdated facilities. Building a new elementary school allows the district to take steps toward consolidating but also achieving net zero energy use, passing on the savings to taxpayers," said Rep. Smith.

The total project cost is $50.5 million, and the town's state reimbursement rate is approximately 65 percent. The new elementary school will replace the town's three elementary schools and will be equipped with rooftop solar panels and geothermic wells. Further information about the project is available on the education district's dedicated web site, http://mansfieldelementaryproject.org/.
