Looking at Health Care From All Sides

As an assistant majority leader and vice chairman of the Legislature’s Public Health Committee, I’m involved in discussions about issues that affect the lives of the residents of our state. In the past year, I have had a front-row seat — and bed — in the health care industry as a patient and consumer.

Since early last year, I have been battling a severe digestive disease that has required major gastrointestinal surgeries and a long-term convalescence. I’ve spent numerous weeks at The William W. Backus Hospital. I would like to thank the entire medical staff for their superlative care and compassion.

While physically demanding and mentally challenging, this experience has been educational and enlightening. At any moment somewhere in Connecticut, there is a nurse or technician checking on a patient and asking if there is anything that can be done to make them more comfortable.

With the start of the 2016 legislative session, I hope all parties in the budget process can adopt a patient-focused perspective. READ MORE HERE
