Nolan Appointed to Juvenile Justice Committee

March 19, 2021

Speaker of the House Matt Ritter appointed Rep. Anthony Nolan to the state's Juvenile Justice Policy and Oversight Committee (JJPOC).

Rep. Nolan, a New London police officer, has authored and sponsored numerous bills targeting racism and social justice.

"Anthony Nolan has dedicated himself, as a public official and officer of the law, to improving the lives of young people in his community," Speaker Ritter said. "He brings years of experience and perspective to JJPOC. Anthony's clear voice will guide juvenile justice policy in the state."

PA 14-217, Section 79, created the Juvenile Justice Policy and Oversight Committee to evaluate policies related to the Juvenile Justice system and the expansion of juvenile jurisdiction to include persons sixteen and seventeen years of age. There are 40 appointed members of JJPOC.

"I want to thank Speaker Ritter for this important assignment," Rep. Nolan said. "As a police officer and a public servant, I look forward to reviewing the state's juvenile justice laws to make ensure justice for all Connecticut residents – especially young people of color who disproportionately end up in the correction system."

Rep. Nolan continued, "The Black Lives Matter movement, death of George Floyd, protests against racism, and the attack on the U.S. Capitol, have revealed the need for change and reform. This year I have introduced legislation to fight racism and inequality and to make right the past injustices against people of color. As a member of JJPOC I will be a voice for those who are often not heard."

First elected in 2018, Nolan is in his second term representing New London’s 39th Assembly District. He is vice chair of the legislature's Appropriations Committee and a member of the Education and Internship committees.
