HB 6483 Passes in the House

May 18, 2021

The children of armed service members often face many challenges - many students frequently switch  schools due to a change in a parent's duty station.

Through HB 6483, CT removes a hurdle by allowing military orders to be accepted as proof of residency for public school enrollment. The bill also adopts "the Purple Star School Program," which will create military friendly schools in our state.

As many military families know, moving from town to town can be frustrating, especially when it comes to enrolling in different school districts. This bill simplifies the process - the program is nationwide and helps military families go through the same process at each port of call that is assigned to them.

With this legislation, Connecticut is taking necessary steps to better support military families during their stay in the state. It ensures that the  enrollment process for these families will be as seamless as possible.

During today's session, the Connecticut House of Representatives voted in favor of H.B. 6483, An Act Concerning the Enrollment of Children of Members of the Armed Forces in Public Schools and the Establishment of a Purple Star School Program. This bill erases educational barriers for military families who are stationed in Connecticut, including those at the naval base in Groton.

As a cosponsor of this bill, I am delighted by the bipartisan support and am eager to follow its journey through the rest of the legislative process. Please reach out to my office if you have any additional questions.
