No Tax Increases In State Budget

May 20, 2021

Today I stood with colleagues in opposition to any tax increases in the upcoming biennial state budget. I did so because this responsible approach to the state budget is part of why you elected me, and I have the opportunity to keep that promise as we work to find a way to support vital programs without raising taxes.

In spite of the pandemic, Connecticut's revenues are higher than expected, the Rainy Day Fund is healthy, and our bond rating has improved. The state is also receiving hundreds of millions of dollars from the federal government under the American Recovery Act. These funds will be used to help the state recover from COVID-19. Taken together, our state is in strong enough financially to warrant holding the line on tax increases in the next budget.

The state budget plan will be the most important legislation we consider in this session. Connecticut taxpayers should not be burdened with unnecessary tax increases and I will work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to reach a budget agreement that helps all residents.
