Zoning Reform - Facts vs Fiction

May 21, 2021

Similar to how the state develops an education curriculum, Connecticut statute 8-2, establishes the guidelines for local zoning codes while allowing local planning and zoning boards to continue to use a public hearing process to adopt their own regulations.

House Bill #6107 will give cities and towns clarity about what they can do, cannot do and must do and will facilitate economic development, environmental sustainability and provide opportunities for our businesses and our families to thrive.

It will help towns offer housing that works for families, seniors, and the many young professionals who want to move into and stay in Connecticut. This will help grow municipal tax bases, making communities more affordable for everyone.

This bill will provide new options for communities to add additional energy and environmental considerations to their zoning codes, develop zones for special purposes, hire consultants and adopt model policies.

Planning and Zoning Commissioners make decisions about land use that have long-term consequences and providing additional tools, education, and clarity to these officials is in everyone's best interest.
