SB 837 Passes in House

June 8, 2021

During Monday's session, SB 837 passed in the House of Representatives. This bill will significantly reduce the use of PFAS, particularly in firefighting foam. I have supported this piece of legislation as it has moved through the legislative process, and I am thrilled that it passed with bipartisan support.

As I am sure many of you remember, our community was impacted  by this chemical - on June 8, 2019, there was a PFAS spill at Bradley International Airport. The chemical ended up in the Farmington River, a popular spot for summer activities. Overnight, fishermen could no longer fill their freezers with fresh fish.  Children could no longer cool off on a hot afternoon.  People could no longer enjoy recreational activities throughout the sweltering summer.

Although the level of the chemical in the river has decreased, we must remember that PFAS is a forever chemical. SB 837 takes us closer to a safer environment.
