SB 837 Passes in House
June 8, 2021During Monday's session, SB 837 passed in the House of Representatives. This bill will significantly reduce the use of PFAS, particularly in firefighting foam. I have supported this piece of legislation as it has moved through the legislative process, and I am thrilled that it passed with bipartisan support.
As I am sure many of you remember, our community was impacted by this chemical - on June 8, 2019, there was a PFAS spill at Bradley International Airport. The chemical ended up in the Farmington River, a popular spot for summer activities. Overnight, fishermen could no longer fill their freezers with fresh fish. Children could no longer cool off on a hot afternoon. People could no longer enjoy recreational activities throughout the sweltering summer.
Although the level of the chemical in the river has decreased, we must remember that PFAS is a forever chemical. SB 837 takes us closer to a safer environment.
