Legislative Update, American Dream TV Comes To Avon, Visit Canton Main Street Farmer's Market

This week provided us a beautiful start to the Summer. I'm looking forward to time with my family, s'mores around the fire pit, and many wonderful local events.

Session went by quickly and I want to make sure you know what we passed in more detail and I'll start sharing that information with you in this e-update.

I also had the chance to spread the good word about Avon and the Farmington Valley Arts Center (see below). And, as you'll see below, some events on the horizon I hope you find helpful.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

With thousands of bills filed this session, it's hard to keep track of the hundreds of bills that passed. Over the next few weeks, I'll provide basic information on bills that passed in a variety of categories.

As always, you can head over to www.cga.ct.gov for more information on each bill.

Consumer Protection Laws This Session:

  • PA 21-59 requires more companies to protect your personal data and to notify you quickly of a data breach
  • PA 21-137 keeps genetic test results out of the hands of insurance companies which protects consumers from rates fluctuating or coverage being denied without consent of the individual who had the genetic test
  • PA 21-156 protects organ donors from higher insurance costs, cancelled coverage or other insurance discrimination based on organ donor status
  • PA 21-14 Lowers prescription drug costs by requiring manufacturing discounts to go to the consumer and not the insurance company

Capitol

  • PA 21-59 and PA 21-119 strengthen our laws on cyber security and identity and/or data theft
  • PA 21-117 expands on the "Take Back Our Grid" Act by protecting residential utility customers:
    • No more cancellation fees by electric companies
    • Consumer-friendly notifications for customers
    • Banned unpredictable variable rates
AMERICAN DREAM TV COMES TO AVON

Recently, I was asked to participate in American Dream TV. It's a national lifestyle and real estate show that airs across the country. On Monday, we filmed the segment around town with agent David Brooke, CEO and Team Leader at Brooke Group Real Estate based in Simsbury.

Each episode features a home for sale and includes a tour from a local resident to show people why they should move here.

I was happy to join David and his crew to talk about the new Whole Foods opening in Avon as well as one my personal favorites in town, the Farmington Valley Arts Center. I also highlighted the large number of bakeries we have based right here!

When the final clip is made available, I'll let you know.

VISIT CANTON MAIN STREET FARMER'S MARKET

Each year, I look forward to the vibrant Canton Main Street Farmer's Market in Collinsville. I'll be volunteering there throughout the summer and hope to see you there. For those of you who don't know, it takes place each Sunday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. through October 17th.

Many new vendors have joined this year and I hope you'll join me in supporting this wonderful local summer tradition.
