Dear Neighbor,

I’m pleased to announce a policy change to address the car theft and break-ins in CT. I worked with our West Hartford Mayor, Town Manager, Chief of Police and state delegation to share legislative recommendations with a bi-partisan committee developing solutions for our state.

One of these recommendations went into effect this week. As of Wednesday, September 1, the CT Judicial Branch will provide police departments with 24/7 access to juvenile arrest records to help curb car thefts and break-ins.

The Judicial Branch and local police have struggled to share juvenile criminal history and that has hampered efforts to investigate and properly prosecute repeat offenders.

This new procedure will allow police departments the ability to seek a juvenile’s prior criminal history at any time.

This change comes after speaking with police chiefs across the state who told us they didn’t have access to information they needed to get the worst offenders off the streets.

I welcome your feedback as we continue legislative discussions on this issue. As we consider our safety, we must invest in prevention to address the many needs of our youth and neighboring urban communities.

CT RANKED #2 FOR BEST STATE TO BE A WOMAN
A report from the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security ranked the best and worst states in the U.S. to be a woman. Connecticut ranked second in the nation, and our neighbor to the north, Massachusetts ranked first.

I am grateful and proud to be raised in and live in our state. This ranking only reinforces the importance of our state level policy decisions. We must continue our proactive efforts to advance gender and racial justice.

This report highlights our work to create a more just and equitable state for all is on the right track, but there is still more to do. We must continue to advance gender and racial justice in all aspects of life to achieve the society we envision.
