What redistricting looks like in Hamden

November 22, 2021

Redistricting is the process by which new congressional and state legislative district boundaries are redrawn every ten years following the completion of the U.S. Census. In Connecticut, a committee made up of equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans is responsible for drawing the lines, and I appreciateĀ all the time and effort these legislators committed to this task.

The new district maps for the Connecticut House of Representatives were unanimously passed on Thursday of last week. As you can see from the map below, Hamden has gained two new districts and in turn, two new Representatives. I want to offer state Representatives Liz Linehan and Mary Welander a warm welcome to Hamden!

Representative Welander's district will now account for the West Rock border with Woodbridge. This means a portion of the 91st district will be represented under the 114th district, and your Representative will change from me to Rep. Welander. I have full faith in the Representative's ability to address your needs as I have in the past.

The great news is that with these changes and additional districts, our Town will now have more negotiating power throughout the legislative process to ensure your voices are heard.

To clarify, Representative Josh Elliott and I will still have the the two "Hamden only" districts. The new maps will not officially go into effect until the 2022 election next November.
