I would like to wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving

Although Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and other celebrations are sure to look different once again this year, the CDC’s 2021 holiday guidelines ensure that with a few precautions, you’ll still be able to gather with family.

As you gather with friends, near and far and give thanks for the many blessings received throughout the year, I hope your holiday is filled with peace, health and gratitude.

NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH

It’s National Native American Heritage Month and as we all know, everywhere we stand is on native land. Their heritage is a proud one and we must acknowledge the damage that was done to their tribal nations through colonization.

If you live in Canton, that means you live on what was Massacoes tribal land. If you live in Avon, you are either on Massacoes or Tunxis land. Because Farmington pre-dates Avon, when researching about the Tunxis tribe, there is often more information listed about Farmington and similarly, more information about the Massacoes is found with Simsbury and Granby.

Knowing the broader history of the land we stand on is both fascinating and important. You can find more information on the Town of Avon’s website about the Tunxis tribe here.

For more information about the Massacoes, click here.

To learn more about the land where you live, text your zip code to (907) 312-5085 or visit Native Land Digital's website to learn more about Native American tribes and their locations.

SAVE THE NIGHT CONNECTICUT

As traffic fatalities continue to rise, the Connecticut Department of Transportation has announced a $10 discount code for Uber, to encourage people who consume alcohol or other impairing substances to get a safe ride home, instead of putting themselves and others on the road at risk by getting behind the wheel.

The discount code, SAVETHENIGHTCT, will be available beginning November 23, 2021 through January 14, 2022 between the hours of 5 PM and 4 AM.

This program is made possible thanks to a grant from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), in partnership with Uber.

Let's all get home safely this holiday season.

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY

This Saturday is Small Business Saturday! Connecticut's small businesses have everything you need for the holidays. Connecticut is home to over 350,000 small businesses, so get out to your local boutiques, spas, jewelers, bakeries, gyms, and more this Saturday!

When you shop at a local business, a significant amount of that money stays in our community and is reinvested in the form of: taxes that help enhance public services, greater employment opportunities, support of local civic and non-profit organizations, increased local business-to-business purchasing.

To find a directory of small businesses here in Canton and Avon, visit the Chamber of Commerce's website. To learn more about the Avon/Canton's Small Business Saturday event, click here.

NEW BUSINESS ONLINE PORTAL LAUNCHED

Business Portal

Great news! Connecticut’s business registration system is now fully integrated with Business.CT.gov, the state’s business portal that serves as a one-stop-shop for businesses and entrepreneurs to navigate state government requirements as effectively and quickly as possible.

The integration allows business owners to login to fewer places in order to do business with the state. Instead of logging in to a separate business registration system after creating a checklist at Business.CT.gov, entrepreneurs now have a built-in experience.
