CT DOT Approves Fairfield Avenue Corridor Study

January 31, 2022

I am pleased to announce that the Connecticut Department of Transportation has approved a corridor planning study for Bridgeport. The study will focus on Fairfield Avenue/Route 130 and Brewster Street to investigate strategies to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, public transit users, and drivers.

The Black Rock neighborhood is vibrant and historic. It's home to diverse residents, small businesses, schools, community amenities, and more. Currently, there are high rates of speeding and motor vehicle crashes in the area, particularly Fairfield Avenue. Additionally, there are limited bicycle and pedestrian facilities. These issues are worsened by I-95 traffic using Fairfield Avenue as a cut through route. We have an obligation to make our community safer for pedestrians and drivers and everyone in between.

This study will help address these issues and support the strategic goals identified by the Black Rock Neighborhood Revitalization Zone, including:

  • Redesigning Brewster Street between Fairfield Avenue and Black Rock Turnpike to address safety and parking issues, linkages with Fairfield Metro train station
  • Exploring and implementing streetscape improvements throughout the Fairfield Avenue corridor

Today's announcement is great news for the Black Rock community. My thanks goes to the Connecticut Metropolitan Council of Governments (MetroCOG), the City of Bridgeport Planning Department, Councilman Scott Burns, and the Black Rock Neighborhood Revitalization Zone for their support in pursuing this State-funded grant application. It will go a long way in improving pedestrian safety and quality of life.

I will provide updates on timing and how you can make your voice heard in the process as the study gets underway.
