Car Tax Relief for Waterbury

May 24, 2022

The updated state budget that we passed and Gov. Lamont signed into law, includes a motor vehicle mill rate cap reduction, which translates to real tax relief for Waterbury residents.

With the mill rate cap reduction from 45 mills to 32.46 mills, anyone who owns a motor vehicle assessed at $21,000 would see tax savings of about $230, for example.

Waterbury will also receive an estimated reimbursement of $15,620,824 for lost revenue because of the mill rate cap.

Tax relief for Connecticut

Connecticut’s motor vehicle taxes have an especially burdensome impact on working families and those on fixed incomes, including many older adults. Reducing the car tax has been a legislative priority for me since I was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2018.

The mill cap rate reduction is also part of a tax-cut package of more than $600 million, which provides historic relief for parents, retirees, workers and property owners in Waterbury and around the state.
