Update on Bobbi the Bear's Orphaned Cubs

May 24, 2022

It's with great sadness that I share with you the loss of Bobbi the Bear, a beloved member of the Newtown community. Last Thursday, Bobbi was shot multiple times on Scudder Road by a home owner in Newtown, leaving behind two orphaned cubs.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) was tasked with determining what the best course of action would be for the cubs. They initially said that it was better to let nature take its course rather than interfere and remove the cubs from their home range. Many community members, activists, and myself were outraged by this choice, as it seemed like these cubs were too young to be left on their own.

On Sunday evening, my legislative colleagues Rep. David Michel, Rep. Nicole Klarides-Ditria, Rep. Anne Hughes, and I met with DEEP to apply the necessary pressure and to encourage them to safely capture and rehabilitate the cubs. I'm pleased to share that the pressure worked and DEEP ultimately changed their position.

The cubs were captured on Monday and on Tuesday were transferred to the Kilham Bear Center in New Hampshire.

Thank you to the tireless advocates and community members for taking action to ensure the capture and proper placement of Bobbi's cubs. It's the compassion and kindness of the Newtown community that makes me so proud to be your state representative.
