Over $9.95M for Hamden Firehouse and Community Center

June 28, 2022
Earlier today, I invited Governor Ned Lamont and Lt. Governor, Susan Bysiewicz to Hamden to join the delegation and Town leadership in celebrating over $8.6 million in state bonding to replace the out-of-date Station 2 Firehouse and construct a new facility.
I have been committed to securing this funding for more than two years. The Station 2 Firehouse is a 100-year-old building that currently violates standards for safety and accessibility, which is an unacceptable working standard for the firefighters who have selflessly protected our community.

According to Mayor Lauren Garrett and Fire Chief Gary Merwede, the $8.6 million in state bonding, will allow Hamden to begin building a brand-new Emergency Operations Center with all of the modern necessities, including on-site training, an Emergency Operations Center, and the ability to respond to the ever-growing needs of the Hamden community.

The current Firehouse, has experienced a 17% increase in call volume over the past five years and continues to be the busiest Firehouse in Hamden, directly protecting almost 24,000 citizens and 6,500 addresses.

I want to recognize and thank all those who assisted in securing this funding for the Town of Hamden. Thank you to Sen. Marilyn Moore and Rep. Dorinda Borer, Co-Chairs of the Bonding Subcommittee, for ensuring this important funding proposal was placed on the bonding agenda. Thank you to Sen. Jorge Cabrera for shepherding this project through the Senate as I worked on it in the House. Thank you to Mayor Lauren Garrett, Fire Chief Gary Merwede, the Hamden Fire Department and the Hamden Professional Firefighters Local 2687 for working collaboratively with the Hamden delegation to secure this funding. And a special thank you to Governor Lamont for ultimately approving the allocation of these funds our community needed.

Additionally, Hamden received a long-standing request of $1.35 million for the Keefe Community Center. This will provide vital funding for repairs to the buildings’ windows, roof, HVAC, gym, and front lobby. These upgrades are intended to create an all-encompassing community center for Hamden, which has been a Town-wide initiative for more accessible resources.
