My Thoughts & Prayers are with Law Enforcement

October 14, 2022
I want to start off by offering my sincerest condolences to the families of Bristol police Sgt. Dustin DeMonte, officer Alex Hamzy and officer Alec Iurato. As we continue to receive updates on just what happened, it only makes this senseless loss more heartbreaking.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire law enforcement community, and especially the loved ones of the officers killed and injured in Bristol.

Disability Employment Resource Fair Today

This is a reminder that Connecticut is hosting its 10th Annual Disability Employment Resource Fair on TODAY from 9AM - 12PM at the New Britain Senior Center (55 Pearl Street, New Britain). The fair will include employers from across Connecticut who will provide information on job opportunities, as well as other partners who will provide information on programs and services for individuals with disabilities.

In addition to the Disability Employment Resource Fair, assistance for jobseekers is available through several other resources – both in-person and virtually – at:

Other services that may be useful include:

  • The Kennedy Center offers travel training to residents with disabilities and seniors who wish to become more independent. This program is free for all participants
  • The Connecticut Department of Transportation and the Connecticut Department of Aging and Disability Services are piloting an initiative to improve independence and accessibility for public transit users who have low or no vision. The Aira app provides no-cost instant access to a live Aira agent who can assist transit users who are blind or have low vision with navigation, reading signs and menus, and managing other essential travel components. More information is available here
  • The Connecticut Department of Aging and Disability Services provides assistance to help navigate federal benefits and paid employment. (For more information, click here

Celebrating our Community
I had the honor of presenting a citation for the 40th annual Woodbridge 5K Road Race to John Adamovich who has organized the race every year for the town of Woodbridge.

On behalf of myself, Sen. Maroney and Sen. Cabrera, we offer our congratulations again, and thanks for your continued dedication to our community!

I also stopped by the 3rd annual “Woodbridge Like Me” event last Sunday. It was wonderful to see so many different cultures celebrated and meet so many residents committed to making our communities more inclusive, curious, and compassionate!

Childcare Worker Bonuses
As a thank you for their tireless work, Connecticut childcare workers will soon receive bonus payments. Governor Lamont released $70 million in state funding for the Wage Supports for Early Childhood Educators program. Through this program, full time childcare employees will receive $1,000 and part time employees will receive $400.

Individuals are eligible for this bonus if they work in:

  • Licensed centers
  • Group childcare homes
  • Family childcare homes
  • License-exempt programs that receive school readiness or child daycare contract funds

Childcare program operators will be required to apply for the funds and then disburse the payments to their childcare staff. The Connecticut Office of Early Childhood will contact eligible childcare programs and provide them with additional information. Click here to learn more.

Reproductive Rights
On Tuesday, the Reproductive Rights Caucus met with Attorney General William Tong to discuss the state of reproductive health care in CT in order to strengthen protections.

Following the meeting, AG Tong hosted a press conference to let residents, and those outside of Connecticut, know of our commitment to ensuring that abortion is safe, accessible and affordable for everyone. Additionally, he announced that our state has teamed up with New York to gather some of the top law firms in the community to provide pro bono legal advice to those who need it.

The hotline can be accessed by calling (212) 899-5567. For more information about abortion access in Connecticut or for information on where to seek assistance, click the button below.
