Dear Neighbor,

What an eventful week it's been! I'm so happy to have so much to share with you. For your convenience, I've included some helpful links to all the information included in this email:

Pints & Policy Recap
A special thanks to everyone who came out to our Pints & Policy event. It was great to see some familiar faces and also have the chance to meet many new people. Your feedback is essential to the legislative process, so I appreciate all those who took the time to attend and share their thoughts with me. I hope you enjoyed the event as much as I did! I look forward to scheduling another event like this in the future.
If you didn't get a chance to attend, you can always reach out by emailing me directly or calling my office at (860) 240-8585.

Following Session
It's hard to believe we are nearly a month into the 2023 Legislative Session already. On Wednesday, the Legislature was in session. This week, we voted on the nominees for Judicial and Executive Branch positions.
Throughout the Legislative Session, committees will be holding several committee meetings and public hearings. I strongly encourage you to stay up to date using the links below. If there is particular legislation of importance to you, you can also track it through the process. This all can be confusing and similar bills can get collapsed into one, so if you ever have questions about what has happened to a bill you care about, never hesitate to reach out.

How to Follow Session:

  • Check the Daily Bulletin- The Bulletin provides daily updates on meetings, press conferences, and other legislative events happening.
  • Visit the CGA Website- The CGA Website offers an array of resources, including the calendar, legislator contacts, and additional Session items.
  • Bill Tracking- Follow specific legislation as it progresses through the General Assembly.
  • Watch on CT-N- Every Session will be live-streamed and recorded on CT-N, so you can tune in online if you aren't able to join us in person.
  • Committee YouTube Pages- Each Committee will live-stream all of their public meetings (hearings, task-force, working groups, etc.) through their own YouTube account, which is a great backup in case CT-N does not cover a specific meeting- they can be found on the CGA Website

These are just some of the easiest ways you can stay up-to-date and follow the Legislative Session as it progresses. Should you need additional assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Legislative Spotlight: Student-Centered School Funding
Since being elected, one of my top priorities in the legislature has been to lift up all our state's students. One important mechanism for achieving this goal is by adequately funding all of our state's schools. As the Vice Chair of the Education Committee, I am thrilled to support H.B. 5003An Act Concerning Education Funding in Connecticut. This proposes putting additional weights on certain variables to provide districts extra funds so that they can provide the services required to meet students' needs. This specific proposal weighs English Language Learners more heavily and includes a weight based on the poverty-density of a municipality. The goal is to make the formula more student-centered and reflective of per-pupil student-based need. Ensuring every child graduates from high school prepared to succeed benefits us all.

Fairfield Country Day
On Wednesday, we were delighted to welcome third graders from Fairfield Country Day School who came to tour the Capitol! The Fairfield Delegation loved having the opportunity to meet some of our youngest constituents and discuss the importance of civic engagement and participation with them. These tours had been on pause during the pandemic so it was particularly lovely to have them as my first-ever student tour.

Sacred Heart University
The Sacred Heart University Cheer Team is for the 4th time the Open All Girl Game Day National Champions! The team competed for the Universal Cheerleaders Association title in the Open All-Girl Game Day Division at the ESPN Wide World of Sports at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, FL. We are so proud of their commitment, teamwork, and accomplishments and we loved being able to honor them in Hartford on Wednesday. Congratulations to the athletes, coach C.J. Sereno, and Sacred Heart University- Go Pioneers!

Sustainable Fairfield
It was a pleasure to join the community in commemorating and celebrating the accomplishments of the Sustainable Fairfield Task Force (SFTF), for which they were recognized by Sustainable CT as a Certified Climate Leader, one of five towns across the state to receive such a distinction. SFTF does major work in our town to promote sustainability, including work to add open space, sequestering carbon, making it easier for homeowners to install solar panels on their properties, and adopting a Complete Streets policy. They have also supported the town in assessing energy use at municipal and school buildings and looking at offsetting them with renewable energy. We are lucky to have these committed volunteers serving our community to make it healthier, safer, and more sustainable. Congratulations on being recognized for all your good work!

Assumption Parish Annual Souper Bowl Food Drive
In other news, the Assumption Parish Annual Souper Bowl Food Drive will be held on Saturday, February 11, from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM and Sunday, February 12 from 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Non-perishable food and household items (which will benefit the local food pantries) can be brought to the Assumption Church at 545 Stratfield Road.
Every donation helps, so if you can, please consider donating to the cause! For more information or to volunteer, please contact Lara Linsenmeyer at (203) 536-0949.

I'm committed to making sure that your voice is heard. Please don't hesitate to call me at (860) 240-8585 or send me an email if there's anything I can do for you. Be sure to follow @LeeperForFairfield on Facebook and Instagram to stay up-to-date on everything I'm doing at the Capitol.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Leeper
State Representative
