New Stamford Rep Swearing Into Office & Webinar to Address Growing Homelessness

March 6, 2023

I couldn't be happier for Rep. Anabel Figueroa, who was sworn into office on Monday at the State Capitol. She is making history by becoming the first Latina to represent Stamford!

She is a huge advocate for healthcare workers and has served more than 20 years as a member of the Stamford Board of Representatives. Congratulations to her and her family!

ADDRESSING HOMELESSNESS

Homelessness is a growing problem in Stamford and around the state. According to a state report last year, there was a 13% spike last year for several reasons including skyrocketing costs and a lack of affordable housing.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is offering some online assistance to tackle this issue head-on. The HUD Exchange is an online platform providing program information, guidance, services, and tools to community partners. It’s hosting an online panel discussion with special guests on Wednesday.

Experts will be breaking down how Special Purpose Vouchers (SPV) can be part of a community’s plan to end homelessness. The webinar will review all SPV Programs and other key resources.

EATING DISORDERS AND THE EFFECT OF SOCIAL MEDIA
It has become more apparent that social media can play a role in developing or encouraging eating disorders. While it may not be a direct cause, for those with low self-esteem and body image issues, spending time on social media can put them in a downward spiral.

According to a survey from a local town, 37% of young girls feel stressed about looking attractive, and 25% of young girls feel pressure regarding measuring up to others in their social media appearance.
