Rep. Khanna Issues Statement on Recent Supreme Court Decisions

June 30, 2023

On Thursday, June 29th, the Supreme Court voted to strike down racial and ethnic preferences in college admissions.

On Friday, June 30th, the Court voted to strike down laws requiring businesses open to the public to serve everyone, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation, and voted to block President Biden’s student debt relief plan.

The first two decisions will open the door to discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation and strikes at the freedom of Americans. The third will unnecessarily burden so many young people with debt, in turn delivering severe economic consequences to our state and nation and putting us at an economic disadvantage to our foreign competitors.

The US Supreme Court’s decisions are disheartening and deeply disappointing and will adversely affect members of the LGBTQ+ community and people of color, denying them fundamental rights and freedoms. As a legislator, I will continue to work to protect the rights of all who live and work in our state so that all can thrive and be treated equally under the law.
