Celebrating a New Law Supporting Our Firefighters

August 31, 2023

I am proud to support a new state law that will make it easier for firefighters, who develop cancer, to access workers’ compensation benefits. My colleagues and I gathered on Wednesday at West End Fire Station in Hartford to announce the law will take effect on October 1, 2023. I have long supported our first responders going back to when I served as the Chair of Quality of Life & Public Safety at Hartford City Council.

The new law creates a presumption that a firefighter’s cancer diagnosis comes from hazardous conditions on the job. This move will make it easier for their claims to be approved. Our firefighters have been putting their lives on the line for our communities, and it is time that we step up and protect them and their families. CLICK HERE to watch and listen to my remarks on the new law.

The law applies to any uniformed member of a paid municipal, state, or volunteer fire department, as well as local fire marshals, deputy fire marshals, fire investigators, fire inspectors, and other classes of inspectors and investigators.
