Let's Talk About It: Proposed Insurance Rate Hikes

August 18, 2023

On my weekly public affairs show, “Let’s Talk About It,” I spoke with Liz Dupont-Diehl, Associate Director at Connecticut Citizen Action Group (CCAG), about its movement to stop proposed insurance rate hikes. The CCAG works on healthcare, climate justice, education equity with the goal of giving residents a voice and the ability to challenge corporations.

Starting in 2021, CCAG released data on how health insurance companies are spending public money, CEO compensation, gross profits, and stock buybacks. According to the organization, CIGNA, Elevance (formerly Anthem), CVS Health, and UnitedHealth Group have used more than $400 billion of premiums and tax dollars to enrich themselves and stakeholders. CLICK HERE for more information.

On August 21, the Connecticut Insurance Department held a public information session on the rate increase requests, which range from 9.8% to 17.5%. National Public Radio/Connecticut Public published an article containing protests from CCAG members outside the Legislative Office Building.

Dupont-Diehl and I also talked about the high rate of claim denials and so much more. Please click below to listen to the entire show!
