Updates from State Rep. Chris Poulos - September 15, 2023

September 15, 2023

It was great to attend the grand re-opening of Friends Cafe on Liberty Street and personally congratulate the new owner, Robin Cimino, on her endeavor!

Robin contacted me in the late summer asking for assistance with permitting through the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP). As your state representative, helping small businesses has been a priority for me. If you are looking for great food and company, stop by Friends Cafe and support Robin!

Please continue reading below for other noteworthy items, and thanks for taking the time to read them!

Remembering 9/11
Monday marked 22 years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Of the nearly 3,000 people killed that day, 161 had ties to Connecticut. Their loved ones are forever in our hearts. May their memories be a blessing.

Southington held a brief patriotic service in Plantsville on the corner of Summer Street and Main Street, and I would like to offer my sincere appreciation to ceremony organizers, first responders, and town officials for bringing our community together for a remembrance. Last week, I also attended Connecticut's annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport. Every year, the state purposefully holds its ceremony on a day prior to the actual anniversary in order to accommodate those who lost loved ones in the attacks, so they can also attend the annual ceremony that is held on September 11 at the site of the World Trade Center.

Paying Down Debt

Since 2020, Connecticut lawmakers have sent more than $7.7 billion in payments to pay down the state's long-term pension debt. This is a result of smart budgeting and a strong economy, which has put the maximum 15% percent of Connecticut's total budget — about $3.3 billion — into the Rainy Day Fund.

We have been diligent to preserve this fund. Every time the level exceeds 15%, payments are automatically made to pay down debt. Prior to 2018, debt was skyrocketing with little-to-no payments made in almost 45 years. Credit agencies have recognized Connecticut for its fiscal responsibility, and we are freeing up future budgets from the burden of debt, which benefits generations of state residents.

Southington Lions Pancake Breakfast

It is a Poulos family tradition to head to the Calendar House for breakfast after the Apple Harvest Road Race. Join me and my family in supporting the Southington Lions at their 58th Annual Pancake Breakfast on October 1.

Lowering Your Prescription Drug Costs

Connecticut is about to take a transformative step toward making prescription drugs more affordable for all.

On Oct. 2, all Connecticut residents will be eligible to sign up for ArrayRx, a prescription drug discount card program that provides up to 80% off certain prescriptions at nearly all pharmacies in the state.

Valid physical Connecticut addresses and email addresses are required to enroll, and a digital card will be provided after registering.

The program is part of Public Act 23-171, An Act Protecting Patients and Prohibiting Unnecessary Health Care Costs, which I proudly supported.

I highly encourage you to not miss out on this great opportunity. Residents should never have to worry about accessing the lifesaving care they need, and this free program is a massive leap forward. I'm thrilled ArrayRx is coming to Connecticut, and I will continue the fight to lower healthcare costs for all.

For more information on ArrayRx, including a drug price lookup tool, visit arrayrxcard.com.

Veterans Committee
Seeks Community Assistance

The Town of Southington Veterans Committee seeks community assistance for its effort to update the existing World War II, Korea and Vietnam Era monument located on the Town Green.

The plaques on the monument have some misspellings and omissions of names that need to be remedied. The Veterans Committee said if you have a family member that is not currently on the monument or whose name is misspelled, contact its office by leaving a message at (860) 276-6299 or email us at veteranscommittee@southington.org for assistance. The criteria to be met for addition to the monument is that the "Home of Record" on the DD-214 must be Southington.
