Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

September 26, 2023

I want to wish everyone a Happy Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 through October 15. Join me all month long as I highlight, participate, and celebrate the rich culture and contributions of our growing Hispanic and Latino American populations in Waterbury and the rest of the state.

I invite you to join my colleagues and me for a Latino Leadership Roundtable on Thursday, September 28 where we will discuss the accomplishments and progress of the Hispanic and Puerto Rican communities. The event will be held from 2:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M. in Room 1C of the Legislative Office Building (LOB) in Hartford. There is guest parking in the adjacent parking lot to the LOB.

Several state representatives, including myself, will be providing thought-provoking conversation about several topics including cultural activism and historical preservation. We hope to inspire you to take part in future events highlighting our Hispanic, Latino, and Puerto Rican heritage.

I also welcome our entire community to come out as I highlight and honor Hispanic-owned small businesses from Waterbury and the rest of the state. I will be hosting a Small Business Expo at the Greater Waterbury YMCA on Saturday, September 30 from 8 A.M.-2 P.M. Companies will be informing attendees about their individual businesses and products. The event is free and open to the public.

Finally, I had the pleasure of honoring the life of trail blazing, Hispanic legend Roberto Clemente. He is a symbol of Latino and Puerto Rican pride, success, and responsibility. Clemente’s son, Luis Roberto Clemente, visited the Clemente Life and Legacy exhibit at Mattatuck Museum on what would have been his father’s 89th birthday.

The following day, the community came together to celebrate Clemente’s accomplishments and legacy at Dunkin’ Park in Hartford. We will always remember the selfless, humanitarian efforts of one of the greatest baseball players of all-time.
