Baldwin Street Sidewalk Improvements & Social Equity Community Reinvestment

November 16, 2023

I'm pleased to announce that Waterbury is receiving thousands of dollars in state funds to give the sidewalks a facelift on a section of Baldwin Street. Please read below to learn more.

Drivers need to slow down at night on I-84 because crews are working on bridge repairs. I'll let you know how long that work will last.

And, dozens of community organizations received funding as part of a community reinvestment pilot program.

You will find the following sections below:

  • Sidewalk Improvement Funding
  • Important Lane Closure Update
  • YMCA's Legislative Champion Award
  • Social Equity Community Investment

Sidewalk Improvement Funding
Waterbury is receiving nearly $785,000 to improve the sidewalks on Baldwin Street in our district. This grant will make our city more walkable and accessible for pedestrians and bicyclists. This work will eventually spread equitable access throughout Waterbury and hopefully spur economic development.
The grant is part of an $11.7 million investment into 17 towns and cities across the state under the state-funded Community Connectivity Grant. The funds encourage people to take an environmentally friendly travel option while connecting them to their communities. I am grateful that Governor Lamont, the State Bond Commission, and the Connecticut Department of Transportation allocated these funds for Waterbury.

Important Lane Closure Update
The Mixmaster Rehabilitation Team says drivers should expect delays on I-84 in Waterbury through Friday. The planned weekend lane closures were canceled and will instead take place at night from now through November 17. Thank you for your patience and understanding as crews complete repairs to bridges throughout the Interchange.

YMCA's Legislative Champion Award

The Connecticut Alliance of YMCAs recognized me, Governor Lamont, Rep. Michelle Cook of Torrington, and several others with the 2023 Legislative Champion Award. This is a very touching award because I have spent many years supporting youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

I pledge to continue supporting our YMCAs and their goal to strengthen communities by empowering young people, improving the health and well-being of people of all ages, and inspiring action in and across communities.

Social Equity Community Investment
Dozens of organizations received much-needed financial support to grow, develop, expand, and bolster programs that uplift Waterbury. NEST, a nonprofit that helps revitalize neighborhoods in our city, announced the recipients of a significant grant totaling $900,000 through the Connecticut Social Equity Council's Community Reinvestment Pilot Program.
This funding aims to support 31 organizations whose goals are to strengthen families disproportionately impacted by the "War on Drugs". Ms. Ginnie Rae Clay was there to share the news, and I had the opportunity to thank the awardees in person. It was a pleasure meeting everyone who is making a difference in our community.
