Skating, Reduced Fee Internet, and Bear Hibernation At Your Home

November 14, 2023

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and had an opportunity to thank our veterans for their service. Now that the chillier weather is here, I would like to let you know that Simsbury Farms Ice Rink is open for the season. As the temperature drops, you may also notice fewer bears taking a stroll in our neighborhoods. You can take a few steps now to prevent them from hibernating in snug locations near (or under!) your home. Check out those tips below.

The federal government is promoting a program that can help you save on affordable internet. Please read below to learn more and see how some applicants may get high-speed internet for free.

Veterans Day Ceremony
It was an honor to stand beside those who served at a Veterans Day Ceremony in Simsbury. I had the privilege of meeting and speaking with some of our heroes. Thank you for your bravery, sacrifice, and service!

Keeping Bears from Hibernating at Your Place
We all know that bears have become synonymous with Simsbury. I’m focused on getting as much information out as I can about bear safety so we can live peacefully and safely with these creatures.

Our garbage cans, bird feeders, and back yard barbecues have fed them well, and they're healthier and producing more offspring than ever. We need to do our part to reduce bear habituation to keep us all safe. For the winter, bears are known to find a snug place under a deck or in a crawl space to spend the winter. FEMA Flood Map Changes

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) generates flood maps as a tool for local communities to identify which areas have the highest risk of flooding. If your property is located in or is in proximity to a flood zone, the revised maps are important to review as they may impact your property.

Please click here for information and directions on how to access preliminary flood mapping for your property as well as how to contact FEMA with any questions.

Affordable Connectivity Program
The Affordable Connectivity Program is a federal program that was created to ensure that American households can afford the broadband internet services needed for work, school, healthcare, and more. It currently serves 20+ million homes across the nation!

You can learn more about and apply for the Affordable Connectivity Program directly online by visiting www.affordableconnectivity.gov.

Low Income Pet Vaccines
The Animal Population Control Program is funded by an annual surcharge on Connecticut dog licenses, the $45.00 adoption fee, as well as proceeds from the sale of the "Caring for Pets" commemorative license plates and donations.

Native American History Month
Did you know that the 1638 Treaty of Hartford banned uttering the Pequot name? Are you familiar with the Mystic River Massacre?

Native peoples, including Pequots, Mohegans, Paugussets, and Schaghticokes, have lived on the land now called Connecticut for more than 12,000 years. This Native American Heritage Month, we must pay tribute to the rich ancestry and traditions of Native Americans in our state, while still facing the truth of our history.
