Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
September 25, 2024Of course Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates Hispanic culture, but it also honors the positive impact and lasting contributions made by generations of our growing Hispanic population to our country.
National Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week-long celebration in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded to a month by President Ronald Reagan 20 years later in 1988. It currently runs from September 15th thru October 15th.
This year's theme is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.”
Here at the state legislature, the Black and Puerto Rican Caucus is an important and influential group of lawmakers who come together to support issues of common purpose. Formed in 1976, their mission includes promoting the economic potential and empowerment of the minority community in the state, as well as encouraging minorities in becoming more actively involved in the political process.
According to the Pew Research Center, the U.S. Hispanic population reached 63.6 million in 2022, up from 50.5 million in 2010. The 26% increase in the Hispanic population was significantly faster than the nation’s 8% overall growth rate. In 2022, Hispanics made up nearly one-in-five people in the U.S. (19%), up from 16% in 2010 and just 5% in 1970.
From art to innovation, the Hispanic community continues to shape our nation and world in powerful ways. Let’s uplift, honor, and keep acknowledging and cherishing their history together!
