Advocating for Expanded Public Transportation

February 7, 2025

I was proud to join advocates on Transit Equity Day at the State Capitol, as we recognized the legacy of Rosa Parks and her courageous stand for transportation justice. Investing in the expansion of public transportation is essential for economic growth, social equity, and environmental sustainability in Waterbury and all of Connecticut.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is dedicated to filling gaps in public transportation by:

  • expanding bus service
  • providing more convenient payment options
  • investing in enhanced mobility for seniors
  • launching a microtransit pilot program

A stronger mass transit system means fewer cars are on the road, cleaner air for our communities, and a lifeline for residents – especially those who rely on buses and trains to access jobs, education, healthcare, and other vital services. It means economic opportunity – helping workers get to their jobs, students get to school, and families access essential services without the burden of high transportation costs.

Right now, too many constituents struggle with limited transit options. Expanding bus and rail services will make our state more connected, more affordable, and more sustainable. It will support businesses, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for all of us.

Mass transit is also a matter of equity and accessibility. Reliable bus and rail service ensures that everyone, regardless of income, age, or ability, has the mobility they need to fully participate in their communities. Improved transportation options will make our state more inclusive and livable for all.

Investing in public transportation promotes environmental sustainability by reducing the number of cars on the road, lowering air pollution, and helping Connecticut meet its climate goals.

Waterbury is a city with potential, and reliable, efficient public transportation will help us unlock it. Let’s honor Rosa Parks’ legacy by ensuring that transit equity becomes a reality. Let’s push for investments that move our communities forward!
