Addressing Transportation Concerns in Waterbury

February 26, 2025

Reliable and safe transportation is essential for Waterbury’s residents, businesses, and overall economic growth. Whether it’s ensuring well-maintained roads and bridges, enhancing pedestrian and cyclist safety, or strengthening public transit, transportation plays a critical role in keeping our city connected and thriving.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Garrett Eucalitto, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), to ask questions about pressing transportation concerns in Waterbury. I specifically requested an update on the ongoing repairs to four bridges in the 75th District that have sustained repeated damage from crashes. Ensuring these critical infrastructure pieces are properly maintained and safeguarded is vital for public safety.

Four bridges in our district are damaged from crashes.
We also discussed ways to improve safety along the Waterbury Naugatuck River Greenway, a top concern for the entire Waterbury Delegation following recent crashes in the area. While Commissioner Eucalitto and I agreed that fencing is not the best solution, we both recognized the urgent need for enhanced lighting along the road adjacent to the greenway for better visibility. Please listen to the video below to hear key moments from our conversation.
CTDOT has come up with concepts for additional trees
and landscaping on the greenway to create a buffer.

Finally, another top priority is maintaining steady railway ridership to ensure reliable and accessible transportation for commuters who depend on this service. Commissioner Eucalitto shared that this fall, crews will break ground on renovations to the interior of our historic train station, preserving its rich history while enhancing its functionality. Additionally, the train station platform will undergo significant improvements to become fully ADA-compliant making rail travel more accessible for all passengers.

As these issues impact residents and commuters daily, I remain committed to advocate for the necessary improvements to ensure safe, efficient, and accessible transportation for all.
