Read Across America Week, Affordable Childcare, and International Women's Day

March 10, 2025

It is Read Across America Week which is a week long celebration of reading in schools across the country. To celebrate this week and also Women’s History Month I read Grace for President to first grade classes at Wolcott Elementary School in West Hartford.

Rep. Gilchrest and Rep. Exum also read Grace for President at elementary schools in West Hartford yesterday. I'm honored to serve with them and make our own history as the most women ever representing West Hartford in the legislature.

LEGISLATIVE BUSINESS

On Tuesday I hosted a press conference with Speaker Ritter on House Priority Bill 5003, a top legislative priority to help families and businesses find affordable and accessible childcare. I’m proud to lead this bill this session with Rep. Brandon Chafee and Rep. Treneé McGee.

HB 5003 Early Childhood Care and Education Fund
This proposal builds upon Public Act 24-91, passed unanimously last year and signed by the Governor, which established the Early Childhood Care and Education Fund. Investing in early childhood care and education produces better educational, health, social, and economic outcomes, driving increased revenue while reducing the need for costly spending.

I look forward to continuing to work hard with my colleagues this session to make this investment happen and deliver for Connecticut’s children, families and our future.

On Wednesday this week, we were back in session in the House. I did receive messages to override the Governor’s vetoes on the two e-certifications we passed the week before, but we decided to go a different route. We passed the e-certification bills again, but we used part of the $300+ million surplus to pay for the $40 million in special education dollars and the $3 million for non-profit grants for organizations already impacted by the Trump Administration.

We also passed a bill to approve the 2025-2030 Conservation & Development Plan which provides guidance across state agencies on land and water resource conservation, preservation and development. Learn more about the plan by clicking on the image below.

STATE AND LOCAL RESOURCES

International Women’s Day is Saturday March 8th.  I am honored to serve alongside such an incredible group of talented and inspiring female colleagues.

This day brings attention to gender disparities, champions women’s rights in political, social, and economic spheres. It encourages important discussions on issues such as workplace equality, reproductive rights, and increasing representation in leadership roles.

We are working together to advance women’s rights and ensure a more equitable and empowering future for all.
