Local Organization Honored for Helping the Homeless
April 11, 2025
I had the honor or recognizing an amazing man who's made it his mission to help the less fortunate in Waterbury. I will dig deeper into how Mr. Joseph Ochieng goes above and beyond for low-income individuals in our community.
We danced and played some music as a college choir from Puerto Rico put on a show at the State Capitol. Please keep scrolling to see pictures of the performance to learn why those students visited our state.
Hispanic lawmakers from around the country recently shared their priorities with the Spanish ambassador to the United States. Read below to learn what we're trying to accomplish.

Recognizing a Local Group Helping the Homeless
I had the honor of recognizing and celebrating the extraordinary work of God Provides Ministries International, led by the dedicated and compassionate Mr. Joseph Ochieng.
In the Greater Waterbury area, we are blessed to have many people and groups working to make a difference, but few have shown their heart, the consistency, and the selflessness that this organization brings every single day.
Whether it’s delivering furniture, beds, mattresses, or just being there with a lending hand and a warm heart, God Provides Ministries International has made its mission to serve those who need it most – our low-income and vulnerable populations.
God Provides Ministries International goes into our neighborhoods, feeding the homeless, caring for families in crisis, and offering community solutions for people in need.
And when tragedy strikes, as it has for many families in Waterbury, Mr. Ochieng and his team have been there. Not with fanfare or cameras, but with beds to sleep in, food to eat, and the comfort of knowing someone truly cares.
It has been an honor for me, as a public servant and as a fellow neighbor, to work and collaborate with God Provides Ministries International and with Mr. Ochieng. His work is a shining example of what it means to lead with love, humility, and relentless commitment to the well-being of others.
Waterbury is better because of you, and I am proud to stand with you!
Puerto Rican Youth Choir Performance
Legislators were in for a wonderful surprise when a Puerto Rican choir visited the State Capitol! The Coro Concierto de la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Bayamón performed and created a wonderful ambiance.
My colleagues and I couldn’t resist joining in on the fun! I grabbed a tambourine, Rep. Minnie Gonzalez danced, and Rep. Hilda Santiago sang along while holding a Puerto Rican flag. The energy in the room was electric, and it was a great moment to showcase the skills our youth are learning in Bayamón.
The choir performed in Connecticut and New York and explored what we have to offer. It was such an honor to hear the youth choir share their music and to talk to them about our work here in Connecticut.
Thank you to the Commission on Women, Children, Seniors, Equity & Opportunity for hosting the wonderful event.
Discussing Latino Priorities with Spanish Ambassador to U.S.
I had the pleasure of meeting Ángeles Moreno Bau, the Spanish ambassador to the United States, during a recent conference hosted by the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators in Washington, D.C. Our conversation centered around legislative priorities that affect Latino communities across the country, from expanding educational and economic opportunities to strengthening cultural representation and civic engagement.
Ambassador Moreno Bau delivered thoughtful remarks on the common Hispanic heritage that unites us and the growing influence of the Hispanic community in shaping the future of the U.S. I look forward to continuing this important work alongside leaders who share a commitment to empowerment for all.
Walk With Me to Raise Prostate Cancer Awareness
April is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, support those affected, and advocate for better access to care. I have made it my mission to support this cause and promote men's health since my diagnosis. Early detection saves lives, and it starts with regular doctor visits and essential screenings.
I invite you to walk with me in Waterbury to show your support for those battling prostate cancer, honor survivors, and spread the word about the importance of early detection.
Where: The new Riverwalk at the end of South Main Street. Please park in the lot next to the walking trail.
When: Sundays in April at 8:30 a.m. – We'll gather for a brief discussion and start walking at 9 a.m.
Let's step forward in support of men's health. I look forward to seeing you there!
