Dear Neighbor,

Happy Friday!

This week is National Nurses Week, and I was proud to join colleagues and advocates to discuss one of the biggest barriers to keeping our nurses safe: the Medicaid medication administration rate.

I had one main message for my fellow lawmakers this session: we need policy, not pizza parties, and we will fight as long as we need to to give our nurses the respect they deserve.

Final Reminder: Senior Scams Event!

A final reminder to please join me, our state Attorney General William Tong, and our Comptroller Sean Scanlon for an event on senior scams and how you can save on prescription drugs happening Monday, May 12 at 10am at the Plainville Senior Center (200 East St, Plainville).

This event will discuss information for elders, caregivers, and family members, how to prevent fraud and protect your rights, the ArrayRx prescription drug discount program, and more. I hope to see you there!

You can read more about the event and register to attend here.

National Teachers' Day

Teacher Appreciation Day was this week - let's celebrate the educators shaping the future of Connecticut! To our teachers: I will always support you, fight for you and work to pass the legislation you deserve.

A Week at the Capitol

Our legislative session is in full swing, and I want to give you a look at what my days looked like this week at the Capitol.

On Monday, the Appropriations Committee reviewed 132 bills! This committee is critical as it is the committee that produces a two-year budget for our state, so we have hundreds of proposals to wade through.

I also was thrilled to join Sen. Blumenthal, Comptroller Scanlon, Rep. Demicco, Farmington school administrators, Farmington High School students, and behavioral health providers for a round table to discuss behavioral health.

On Tuesday, I met up with my friend and colleague Rep. Kaitlyn Shake to make a video in honor of National Nurses Day and to discuss some of our priorities for nurses this session, and every session.

I was also a host for the 2025 Women-Owned Business Day and I attended a press conference recognizing International Firefighters Day!

On Wednesday, I was proud to stand in solidarity with the striking workers of IAM Local 746 - skilled machinists at Pratt and Whitney fighting for the respect they deserve, and then attend session to pass some great bills that you can read about below!

Firefighters Cancer Relief Program

House Democrats voted this week to make important changes to the Firefighters Cancer Relief Program, including among other things expanding the types of cancers covered to include skin cancer and authorizing workers’ compensation administrative law judges to handle appeals of any denial of benefits.

Taking care of our first responders is always a legislative priority.

Strengthening Healthcare for CT's Seniors

The House also voted to strengthen healthcare for Connecticut's seniors! This legislation among other things increases access for vital biomarker testing, establishes a task force to address the specific needs of seniors with Alzheimer's and dementia, and enhances safety with improved background checks for all nursing home employees.

This action reflects our ongoing efforts to support and care for our aging population.

Warehouse Quotas

House Democrats also took action this week to make sure that warehouse workers are treated with respect by passing legislation that limits and provides clarity when employers use production quotas.

The legislation also ensures that:

✅ Employers must provide quota information upon hiring an employee

✅ If quotas change, workers must be notified

✅ Employees cannot be retaliated against for requesting work records

✅ Quotas cannot be used to inhibit workers from using the restroom or taking an entitled break

Valuing people over profits is good public policy.

Additional Bills Passed in the House

The House has passed a number of other bills so far - you can read below to learn about some of them:

  • HR 15 – Approves a collective bargaining agreement between Charter Oak State College and SEIU Local 1973, strengthening the rights of workers in higher education.
  • HB 6897 – Extends the sunset date for personal risk insurance rate filings, ensuring fairness for consumers.
  • HB 5008 - Establishes a Connecticut-Puerto Rico Trade Commission
  • HB 5004 - Take action to protect our environment, including greenhouse gas emissions reductions, support clean energy jobs, and more
