Dear Neighbor,

The first Fourth of July Facebook post was more of a joke than anything else.

Nine years ago, my best friend and I snapped a photo with our much younger children and posted the image on social media.

It was meant to be a friendly quip about bipartisanship, as my friend and I are on opposite sides of the political spectrum.

But the posts have taken on a more sober -- and significant -- meaning, as our discourse has become increasingly and troublingly divided.

Now the annual post is a valid reminder that, while we may disagree politically, there is more that binds us together than divides us.

The first five letters of "civilization" are "C-I-V-I-L". Let's remember that we all have far more in common than the things that could drive us apart. I have no doubt we all love our neighbors, our city, our state and our country.

But let's also remember to always be civil.

Honoring SAVE Volunteers

We celebrated our incredible SAVE (Seniors Add Valuable Experience) volunteers with an ice cream social at the United Way of Coastal and Western Connecticut!

This past year, Danbury seniors gave 6,601 volunteer hours, valued at over $229,000, supporting city departments and local nonprofits.

This program is open to all Danbury residents 65+. A huge thank you to our volunteers!

Mental Health Parity

Governor Lamont signed legislation this week that puts patients first and holds insurance companies accountable.

Here’s what it does:
✔️ Caps excessive premium hikes. Allows the Connecticut Insurance Department to limit rate increases for insurers that have a track record of hiking costs.

✔️ Enforces mental health parity — with real consequences. Insurers must treat mental health like physical health, and those who don’t comply can face fines up to $625,000 and must publicly report how they’re doing.

✔️ Ends harmful “step therapy” delays. Patients with MS, rheumatoid arthritis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression will no longer be forced to try cheaper meds first while their condition worsens, and trial periods are also cut from 60 to 30 days.

As always, if you have any comments, questions or concerns, please reach out to my office.

Sincerely,

Farley Santos
