Last week, seven individuals were arrested by ICE while working at the Optimo Car Wash on Main Street in Newington.
At this time, we have no new information regarding the individuals who were detained. We do know that two of the families impacted have young children and are currently receiving support from local organizations as they face this crisis.
It is deeply frightening and profoundly troubling that our federal government continues to use fear and intimidation to target immigrants and their families. These actions disrupt lives, tear families apart, and erode the trust that communities need to thrive.
Under the United States Constitution, every person—regardless of immigration status or country of origin—is entitled to due process and fundamental protections. These rights are not optional, and they must not be denied.
I stand firm in solidarity with our immigrant neighbors, and we will continue to fight for dignity, justice, and humanity for all.

Almost 1 in 10 Connecticut residents are burdened by medical debt and often they are the most vulnerable among us.
Connecticut became the first state to help over 120,000 residents pay off medical debt. But many of us are just one car accident, one cancer diagnosis, one house fire, or one chronic disease away from crushing medical debt. Even if we haven’t personally experienced medical debt, it looms over us and threatens our peace of mind because it’s usually unplanned, unpredictable, unavoidable, and unaffordable.
Click here to view steps health care consumers can take to reduce or eliminate medical debt.
If you have a problem, question or concern about your healthcare policy, its coverages, your deductibles, having your claims paid or getting preauthorization for medically necessary care, contact The Connecticut Office of the Healthcare Advocate today!

Today is Women's Equality Day. On this day in 1920, the 19th amendment was certified - giving women the right to vote...but the fight was not easy. It took activists and reformers nearly 100 years to win that right after a massive, peaceful civil rights movement.
It must be acknowledged that the women’s suffrage movement failed women of color. It took many more years before Black, Latina or Native American women could vote. It's on us every day to sustain our democracy and our rights.
