More State Funding for Local Road Work
September 17, 2025Connecticut’s Town Aid Road (TAR) grant program is growing, rising from $60 million to $80 million in the new state budget.
Safe public roads for travel and commerce is often taken for granted, but obviously they are critical to our daily lives. Your tax dollars are what maintains our roadways, and state TAR funds are an important part of the equation.
This funding boost represents a 33% year-over-year increase that will directly support our cities and towns with the costs of local road paving, maintenance, and safety operations. It is the program’s largest investment in more than a decade, and will help towns repair roads faster, improve safety, and respond better to severe weather.
The TAR program provides direct funding to all 169 towns, with no local match required. Municipalities use the funds for a wide range of transportation-related needs, including road and bridge repair, snow plowing, tree trimming, traffic signal upgrades, and essential public transit services. Each municipality determines how to prioritize and deploy its TAR funding.
Public transportation and infrastructure are two of the most essential services provided by your government, making this increase in funding a great investment in your community.
