Legislative Update for Aug. 19, 2025

August 19, 2025

I write today to express my unequivocal support for State Representative Corey Paris.

Last week, Rep. Paris issued a simple message on social media: to remain vigilant in light of reports of ICE activity, and to look out for one another. His message was rooted in compassion and concern for his community.

Instead of being received as the act of public service that it was, Rep. Paris has endured a wave of vicious vitriol, harassment, and racist attacks, including threats against his family. (Coverage can be found here, here and here.)

This campaign of intimidation is inherently un-American and completely unacceptable.

Attorney General William Tong has made clear that Rep. Paris’s words are firmly protected under the First Amendment. House Speaker Matt Ritter rightly called his message a “powerful” reminder of neighbors caring for neighbors.

They are right, and we must echo their support.

This is what true patriotism looks like: having the courage to speak out for those who live in fear.

Rep. Paris demonstrated patriotism by putting people before power and by choosing unity and compassion over indifference.

As Rep. Paris himself said, his fear is nothing compared to the fear undocumented people live with every single day.

That is why his leadership matters, and why we must all commit to standing against warrantless raids, conducted by unidentifiable agents acting under the color of law, that tear families and communities apart.

I urge you to join me in supporting Rep. Paris, condemning the harassment he has faced, and reaffirming our shared commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our communities.

That is the work of justice.

That is the work of democracy.

That is the work of freedom.

Around the 37th

Had a great time at the Save the River–Save the Hills Kayak Regatta on the Niantic River last weekend.

This event is a wonderful reminder of why protecting our watershed and natural spaces is so important. Together, we can make sure future generations enjoy the same beauty we do.

As someone who loves Connecticut history, visiting the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History today was a real treat.

I got to see pieces of our local story up close, including:

  • A painting of McCook House, which once stood in Niantic in what is now McCook Park.
  • And an 1893 letter from East Lyme resident W.T. Cutter, Connecticut’s state chemist, on the medicinal benefits of whiskey. Proof…that history comes with both serious lessons and a few smiles.

These aren’t just artifacts; they’re threads in the fabric of our community. I’m grateful to the museum for preserving these stories for 200 years. I hope we continue to learn from them as we write the next chapter.

You never know who you’ll bump into at the Niantic Farmers Market!

Many of you will recognize Ed Jutila, who served the 37th District as State Representative for 12 years. It was great catching up with him amid the fresh produce, friendly faces, and community spirit that make this market special.

Moments like these are a reminder that East Lyme’s strength comes from its people—past leaders, present neighbors, and everyone working together to keep our community vibrant.
