Updates from State Rep. Farley Santos for March 20, 2026

March 20, 2026

As state legislators, we have a duty to put families first and ensure that rapidly evolving technology does not harm our children. I strongly support Rep. Gary Turco’s efforts to address the growing risks posed by social media and artificial intelligence, particularly as studies and health officials point to rising anxiety, depression, and excessive screen time among young people.

Too often, social media platforms are intentionally designed to maximize engagement through addictive features like endless scrolling, algorithm-driven feeds, and constant notifications. While profitable for companies, these tools can negatively impact children’s mental health and well-being.

The legislation Rep. Turco has championed, Governor's Bill 5037, strikes the right balance. It preserves access to social media while establishing commonsense safeguards—such as limiting algorithmic feeds and notifications unless parents opt in, setting healthier default privacy protections, restricting late-night alerts, and allowing families to set reasonable daily usage limits. Importantly, it empowers parents to make decisions based on what works best for their children.

This approach does not censor content or restrict free expression. Instead, it targets the addictive design elements that keep kids online longer than is healthy. At the same time, we must remain vigilant about emerging risks, including unsafe interactions with AI tools.

Protecting children in the digital age is not optional—it is our responsibility. This legislation is a meaningful step toward ensuring technology serves families, not the other way around.

March Madness: Two CT Champs or Bust

Just so you know … I’m confident in my Mayor’s Office Brackets, which means UConn is taking the double, MEN & WOMEN. 🏆🏆

BTW: I'm saying "two champs" with my hand, not "Hook 'em, horns." No Texas fandom allowed this time of year.

Speaking at DHS

From the classroom to the community, this is what leadership looks like.

Mayor Roberto Alves and I were invited to speak at DHS Main with Law & Government Academy sophomores about our journeys into public service and why giving back matters.

Safe to say the future is already in the room. One student is aiming to become an ambassador.  I don’t doubt that goal for a second.

There are big things ahead for these young leaders.

Meeting Salvation Army Cadets

Great meeting the next generation of The Salvation Army cadets, serving communities across our region and beyond.

They stopped by to connect with the Mayor, and you can already see the passion, discipline, and heart they bring to service.

Organizations like the Salvation Army make a real difference every day, and these cadets are ready to carry that mission forward.

Wishing them all the success ahead and thanking them for choosing a life of service.

St. Paddy's Day in Danbury

Danbury doesn’t just celebrate St. Patrick’s Day… we show up for it ☘️

From sunrise to sunset:

  • Supporting Regional Hospice, a great organization and personally important to me.
  • Listening to Gaelic hymns echoing through St. Peter Church at Mass.
  • Raising the Irish flag on a cold but proud morning at Heritage Plaza.
  • Honoring a (very sacred local) tradition with a must-stop at O'brien's Irish Pub. (Tradition is tradition.)
  • Closing out the day at the Greater Danbury Irish Cultural Center with community, culture … and a well-earned Guinness (safely).

This is what makes Danbury special: heritage, pride, and people who show up every time.

Shoutout to Chris Setaro and the Setaro Law Firm for always stepping up to support these moments.

Days like this remind you … Danbury crowns them all.

Coming Together, Breaking Fast

I was invited by our friend Mohammed to break fast at Baitul Mukarram Masjid on the last Friday night of Ramadan. Sharing the Iftar after a day of fasting is a powerful reminder of the meaning behind this sacred time: reflection, gratitude, generosity, and community.

The food was incredible, but the fellowship around the room made the night truly special.

As the 7th-most diverse city in the country, moments like these remind me how important it is to embrace and learn from each other’s traditions. I’m always intrigued by different faiths and their customs, and even more struck by how much our religions have in common.

What brings us together will always be stronger than what divides us.
Wishing a peaceful and blessed Ramadan in these final days to all who celebrate.

Salute to Carpenters

Always a pleasure running into members of Carpenters Local 326. These men and women are building our communities and fueling our economy! Proud to stand with them!

Heart and Pride of Abbott Tech Hoops

Not the ending we wanted at the semifinal, but Abbott Tech Boys Basketball showed heart, grit, and determination all season. Proud of these student-athletes and the way they represented our city all season long.

More Hoops Heart and Pride

Stop scrolling for a second… Danbury just made history.

The Danbury PAL 5th Grade Girls Basketball team are NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONS!

These incredible young athletes battled through teams from six states and brought the title home with heart, grit, and teamwork.

Moments like this remind us why youth sports matter. Confidence. Leadership. Teamwork. And memories these girls will carry for a lifetime. Danbury is incredibly proud of you, champions.

Let's Talk: Roads

After one of the toughest winters in recent years, potholes are popping up everywhere. Right now, Public Works crews are out filling potholes with cold patch until asphalt plants reopen and hot patch repairs can begin.

Here’s something many people don’t realize: it costs about $1 million to repave just ONE mile of road, including the necessary drainage work.

Danbury has over 244 miles of city roads, and last year Mayor Roberto Alves committed to paving 15 miles annually, ultimately paving 17 miles. Another 15 miles are planned for this year and forward.

For context, previous administrations averaged about 8 miles per year (with a little more typically done in election years).

See a pothole? Help the city fix it faster. Alert the city through:

  • 📱myDanbury App
  • 📞 call 311
  • 🏛️contact the Mayor’s Office

We’re getting it done, together, Danbury.

Also, it can't go without mentioning a huge thanks to the Public Works crew!

Scholarship Recipient

Proud moment for the 109th District.
I was honored to help secure a Wilfred X. “Spike” Johnson Scholarship as a member of the CT Black and Puerto Rican Caucus for my constituent Ava-Marie, a junior Nursing student at UConn.

I’ve known Ava and her family since she was in middle school and I know she’s going to make an incredible nurse.

Congratulations, Ava! Danbury is cheering you on!

Dinner in Danbury

Confession: we had never tried Pappadella's Restaurant before last weekend. Our Daughter-Daddy dinner date changed that, and we’re glad it did.

The food was phenomenal and the hospitality from Chef Andres, Jose, and Willian made the night even better. Check them out at 52 1/2 Pembroke Road.

Danbury has so many incredible local spots, and this is definitely one to add to your list. If you’ve been, what’s your favorite thing on the menu?

Congratulations,
Mary Arconti Gregory!

I’ve known my friend Mary Arconti Gregory for nearly two decades, and I’ve seen firsthand the impact she has had on our community. From helping build the Danbury Student and Business Connection into the successful organization it is today to her leadership as President of the Danbury Police Activities League, Mary has always been committed to creating opportunities for others. She comes from a family with a long legacy of service to Danbury, something she continues to carry forward in everything she does.

That’s why I’m so excited to congratulate her on her new role as Director of Academic Partnerships for Danbury Public Schools.

Mary understands how powerful the connection between education and the business community can be. I have no doubt she will take the Career Academy pathways to the next level and help open even more doors for Danbury students.
I’m looking forward to working with her to keep strengthening those partnerships and making sure our students are prepared for the careers and economy of tomorrow right here in Danbury.

Congratulations, Mary!
