Statement on the Arrest of Anthony Federline

We’re just beginning to absorb the details surrounding the arrest of Eve Rogers’ stepfather, Anthony Federline, on charges of 1st-Degree Sexual Assault and Risk of Injury to a Child. There are many questions we need answered, and with time, I’m confident those answers will come.

What we do know is heartbreaking. A young life, a life that never had the chance to be fully lived, has been lost, and our community is left to grapple with that loss. In moments like this, we are reminded that the policies we debate in Hartford are not abstract. They have real consequences for real people, especially the most vulnerable among us.

As policymakers, we have an obligation to examine whether there are gaps in our systems that allow children to fall out of view. We must recognize that the system is broken and in need of urgent repair.  This case underscores the need to ensure that no child can be hidden from appropriate oversight in a way that allows harm to go undetected.

We must be clear-eyed about the legislation currently before us. As written, House Bill 5468 extends too far in overseeing homeschooling families who are acting in good faith. That approach risks diluting the bill's focus and places unnecessary burdens on homeschool families and school districts alike.

The Legislature cannot stand still in moments like this; the Legislature must do better.

We have a unique opportunity in this moment and this time to address a real and growing problem that is putting some of our children at risk. The General Assembly should move quickly to amend House Bill 5468 so that it is narrowly tailored to its most critical purpose: protecting the safety and well-being of children who are at risk. That includes closing any loopholes that may allow individuals to evade accountability under the guise of homeschooling, particularly in cases where there has already been interaction with state agencies.

This is a difficult moment, but it is also a clarifying one.  We must focus our efforts where they are needed most and draw a clear line: protect our children and respect responsible parents. To do anything less would be egregious and irresponsible.
