Updates from State Rep. Nick Menapace for April 7, 2026

April 7, 2026

This is my first short session, so the whole thing kind of felt like we were in the home stretch. But we REALLY are in the home stretch, with fewer than 30 days left before sine die.

There is still plenty of work to be done.

At the recent Blue Collar Caucus press conference, I spoke about SB 351 and the need for a fair, consistent standard for teacher termination.

As a teacher, this is personal. Educators deserve a system that guarantees fairness and respects the professionalism they bring to the classroom every day.

Trans Day of Visibility

I joined Susan Bysiewicz, the LGBTQ+ Caucus, and advocates at the Capitol earlier this week for Trans Day of Visibility.

Grateful to be part of a moment that centers dignity, respect, and inclusion.

Committee Work

Some real wins out of the Finance Committee recently:

  • Family Caregiver Tax Credit — helping the people who shoulder the cost of caring for loved ones at home.
  • Renters’ Relief — a refundable credit to ease the burden on residents paying a huge share of their income in rent.
  • Affordability Measures in SB 1 — targeted steps like expanding the property tax credit and exempting essential items from sales tax to help lower everyday costs.
  • Lower energy costs for small businesses
  • More meals‑tax dollars reinvested in our towns
  • Expanded Tax‑Free Week (up to $300 + backpacks!)
  • Income tax brackets that adjust with inflation

Grateful to keep doing the work that strengthens our towns and supports the people who make them thrive. That includes practical, targeted changes that move us toward a tax system that works for regular people

Letter to the Editor

Here is my latest letter to the editor to The Day.

In Connecticut, we’re often told we must choose between building housing and preserving open space — but that’s simply not true. Limiting development to large-lot, single-family homes doesn’t stop growth; it spreads it out, increasing infrastructure costs and, over time, putting pressure on property taxes.

A smarter approach is to focus on thoughtful infill development—building near existing infrastructure, in village centers, and along transit corridors. This allows us to protect open space while supporting local businesses and creating housing options for families, seniors, and working residents.

However, inconsistent decision-making in local approvals can make it harder to plan responsibly. By aligning our policies with these goals, we can grow efficiently and sustainably—without sacrificing the character of our communities.

Kickball for a Cause

On Monday, April 13, Democrats and Republican members of the Connecticut General Assembly will compete in a kickball game at Dunkin' Park in Hartford. Tickets are $12.50 and All proceeds go to the United Way!

Work on Gold Star Bridge

Work on the southbound Gold Star Bridge began this week with nighttime closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. This traffic pattern will remain in place for the duration of the project.

Northbound work is expected to begin May 9. Only two lanes will remain open, with additional traffic crossing over to the southbound bridge.

Please slow down in work zones, follow posted signage, and be aware that schedules may change due to weather or other delays.

Congrats, Hartford Athletic!

Huge congrats to Hartford Athletic on the 2025 USL Cup! 🏆

Now let's get out there and support the team at Dillon Stadium this season!

Around the 37th

It was great to have Ms. Greene’s class from East Lyme High School at the Capitol recently! Always glad to see students engaged and learning more about how our government works.

No kings. No oligarchs. No more waiting.

We showed up today in Niantic. Now we carry this into every town meeting, every election, every fight that matters. Real patriotism is pushing this country to be what it's supposed to stand for.

Rep. Pemberton, Rep. Gauthier, and I stopped by Nino's Pizzeria for Montville Restaurant Week!

The event is over, but a reminder: Eat local. Support our community. Help our furry friends.
