Boom Box Parade

I want to thank everyone who helped make this year’s Boom Box Parade another unforgettable Fourth of July tradition! It was amazing to see the community united on Main Street, proudly wearing red, white, and blue as we celebrated our nation's 250th anniversary and the incredible spirit of our community.

It was a pleasure to march alongside Governor Ned Lamont (pictured above), Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Treasurer Erick Russell, and so many friends and neighbors who came together to celebrate this unique tradition.

This year’s parade lasted an impressive 94 minutes, the longest in a decade, and took place one of the warmest Fourth of Julys on record. Despite the heat, the enthusiasm and community pride on display was inspiring. Thank you to the organizers, volunteers, participants, and everyone who came out to make this year’s Boom Box Parade such a memorable success!

Let's Talk About It: History Comes To Life

I had an insightful conversation with local historian Bev York on my weekly radio show as we commemorated the 250th anniversary of American independence. York was integral in bringing history to life during Windham Celebrates America 250 at Jillson Square. Through her efforts, York ensured that guests had a unique opportunity to experience what life was like during the Revolutionary era.

Through historical reenactors, a Revolutionary War encampment, and an authentic schoolhouse, attendees stepped back into the 1770s and gained a deeper appreciation for the people and events that shaped our nation’s founding.

Approximately a dozen reenactors portrayed influential figures such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Connecticut signers of the Declaration of Independence, including Samuel Huntington, Roger Sherman, and Oliver Wolcott, sharing their stories and explaining their contributions to America’s fight for independence. Other historical reenactors included Mary Williams and Anne Wood Elderkin.

During our conversation, Beverly York also highlighted how pivotal events like the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party helped ignite the movement toward independence.

As we mark 250 years of American independence, it's important to remember the people, events, and ideals that continue to inspire us today. Click on the video below to listen to our full conversation!

Reading the Declaration of Independence

I was honored to join my legislative colleagues in reading the Declaration of Independence at Connecticut’s Old State House as we paid tribute to the 250th anniversary of American independence. Standing in the very place where so much of Connecticut's early history unfolded, it was inspiring to bring our founding fathers' words to life by each reading a portion of this remarkable document.

The ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the enduring principles of liberty, democracy, and self-government that have guided our nation for two and a half centuries. It also gave us an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who fought for our independence and on our responsibility to preserve those freedoms for future generations.
Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas, my fellow legislators, and I also highlighted Connecticut’s contributions during the American Revolution. May we continue striving to build a stronger, more united future while honoring the ideals that have shaped our nation for 250 years.
