Dear Neighbor,

National Vietnam War Veterans Day
Connecticut is home to approximately 57,467 Vietnam War veterans. Additionally, more than 600 Connecticut service members lost their lives in the Vietnam War.

On Vietnam War Veterans Day, we proudly recognized our Vietnam veterans for their dedication and service to our nation. Thank you for your courage, commitment, and sacrifice.

New London Town Hall
I hope you'll join me and State Rep. Aundré Bumgardner next Thursday, April 10 from 6-7:30pm at The Place for Community Wellbeing (74 Garfield Ave., New London) for a legislative town hall. This event is a great opportunity to update you on the legislative session, tell you about our priorities this year, and hear what's on your mind.

I hope to see you there!

Only one day of public hearings next week. You can register to testify and find more details in this week’s CGA Bulletin.

*Reminder - you only need to register if you wish to provide testimony. You can tune in to watch the proceedings live on the committee’s YouTube channel.

Introducing My Team
A "Shout It Out" - I’m incredibly proud to introduce my outstanding team: Greg Davis, Outreach Coordinator; Francisco Munez, Constituent Engagement Coordinator; and Jackson DeLaney, Press Aide.

Each of them brings energy, dedication, and heart to everything they do. Whether it’s connecting with the community, addressing constituent concerns, or helping share our message, their support allows me to be fully present and effective in serving New London.

They keep me grounded and squared away, even as my schedule is constantly shifting. I’m truly grateful for their flexibility, commitment, and the amazing work they do every day—I couldn’t do this without them. Thank you all so much, I appreciate you.

Proposed Legislation Regarding Sentence Modification Hearings

This week I joined the Capitol News Briefing with Rep. Hughes and CT Second Look Sentencing Project on Proposed Legislation Regarding Sentence Modification Hearings. Today we read testimony for about 12 incarcerated individuals who are unable to give testimony before legislators. I read testimony on behalf of an incarcerated man name Hector about barriers for those incarcerated when it comes to sentence modification.

Bill Adding New Beds to Nursing Homes

This week the Aging Committee received a bill referred from Human Service Committee. This bill passing out of Committee referred to Current law including a moratorium that generally prevents the Department of Social Services (DSS) from accepting or approving certificate of need (CON) requests for additional nursing home beds, with some exceptions.

This bill introduces a new exception, allowing DSS to approve requests for adding new Medicaid-certified beds to either existing or newly established nursing homes. In making these approvals, DSS must prioritize nontraditional, small-house style nursing homes that align with the department’s long-term care strategic plan and address needs in designated priority census tracts.

Meeting with SEIU
This week I had the great opportunity to meet with members of SEIU - CT State Council to help them share concerns about legislation and decisions to be made this session. We alo talked about being Stronger Together.

Meeting at the Connecticut Policy Academy
This week I had a great meeting at the Connecticut Policy Academy in Meriden. We have started some great discussions and initial conversations on policies for Diversionary Implementation training with JJPOC colleagues, POST Staff and Administration.

While there, I found a picture of when I graduated the Police Academy back on April 7, 2000. Wow... time sure did fly.

OIC Day at the Capitol
This week’s OIC Day at the Capitol was a powerful reminder of the impact Opportunities Industrialization Centers (OICs) have on communities across Connecticut. It was great to see New London OIC staff stand alongside their colleagues from Bridgeport, New Britain, New Haven, and Waterbury to share with legislators, neighbors, and friends the critical work they do.

We must continue to support OICs and their mission. Workforce development is key to breaking cycles of poverty, strengthening our communities, and ensuring that every Connecticut resident has the opportunity to succeed. Let’s invest in solutions that empower people and drive economic growth.

Thank you to everyone who participated and advocated for this essential work. Together, we can make a lasting impact!

Rollin' with Rep. Nolan - Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas

On this week's Rollin' with Rep. Nolan, I was joined by Stephanie Thomas, the Connecticut Secretary of the State!

The Secretary of the State's office is responsible for overseeing the state's elections, business registry, keeping records of bills passed into law, and much more.

Among other things, we talked about some of the unique features of Connecticut's voting systems, how to combat election misinformation, resources available to voters who face barriers, and how her office has made our business registration system more accessible.

To learn more about what the Secretary of the State's office does, you can go to their website here: https://portal.ct.gov/sots
Thank you very much to Secretary Thomas for joining the show!
