What's Our Rep Been Up To?

I stopped by the Simsbury Historical Society Craft Fair last weekend to grab some holiday gifts, stocking stuffers, and tasty baked treats! While I was shopping, I noticed the new blacksmith shop is moving forward at lightning speed.

Once it’s complete, the blackshop will give visitors a sense that they’re going back in time. As a child, I spent time in a relative’s blacksmith shop, and I remember the distinct smell of the forge and coal as well as seeing the sparks flying as iron was getting pounded into an anvil. Soon children of all ages will get to experience that right here in Simsbury! Please make sure to stop by the Craft Fair this coming weekend and check it all out!

Home-Based Child Care Jobs
Apprenticeship Program

Great news for parents who are struggling to find and pay for high quality childcare and for employers who are struggling to hire and retain qualified employees. Connecticut has just created a novel home-based child care apprenticeship program, which will provide paid training. This program will be a game-changer for improving the quality and availability of early child care and education with coursework in child development.

If you're interested in applying, don't forget that you can earn while you learn! The workforce training program is federally backed and requires a minimum of 2,000 hours working on the job and hundreds of hours of classroom learning. Once a participant completes the program, that person receives credentials, which in turn raises wages and improves the quality of home-based care.

Beware of Phishing Scheme
Targeting Job Seekers
If you’re looking for a new job, beware of scammers trying to get your personal information. According to the Connecticut Department of Labor (CTDOL), criminals are asking victims for banking, credit card, and social security information while pretending to work at the state’s job bank, CTHires.

If you are in any of the following scenarios while applying for a job, hang up immediately:
  • You're asked to pay a fee to apply or to be considered
  • You're asked for your social security number, bank account number, or credit card details to complete your application
  • You're told to give up valuable information or you'll lose a job opportunity

Snowplow Naming Contest
Students in Wilton, New Canaan, Ridgefield, and the rest of the state are invited to submit their most creative names for four snowplows, which will clear ice and snow on our state roads and highways during storms. K-12 schools have until Friday, December 15 to send in their best names!

The winning schools will have their submitted name featured on the side of the Department of Transportation snowplow. Students need to be up for the challenge! Previous winners include Buzz Iceclear, Husky McSalty, Plowzilla, and Scoop Dogg. The naming contest allows kids to think critically and be aware of snowplow safety guidelines.
