Dear Neighbor,

Significant snow is in the forecast for the weekend, so before the potential storm that could bring as much as 12 inches of snow to the area, please stay informed and prepared during an evolving situation. Tune into local television and radio for the latest forecast and emergency information. You can also sign up for emergency alerts from the Town of Southington by clicking here.

Below are some additional actions to take:

Prepare your home:

  • Insulate pipes to prevent them from freezing by wrapping exposed pipes with heat tape or foam insulation.
  • Seal leaks around windows and doors to keep the cold air out.
  • Check your chimney or flue for blockages to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Stock up on firewood or other fuel for your heating system, if applicable.
  • Ensure your home has adequate fire extinguishers and working smoke detectors.

Gather supplies:

  • Build an emergency kit that includes food, water, non-prescription medications, first-aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, a radio, blankets and warm clothing.
  • Consider additional needs for infants, young children, older adults or anyone with disabilities.
  • Charge your cell phone and other electronic devices.
  • Fill your car's gas tank and have a winter emergency kit, including a shovel, sand or kitty litter for traction, blankets and a first-aid kit.

Plan for power outages:

  • Have alternative lighting sources, such as battery powered candles or lanterns.
  • Have a battery powered radio to stay informed.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to preserve food.

Make a plan for your pets:

  • Ensure they have adequate food, water and bedding.
  • Prepare a safe place for them to stay indoors.

During the storm:

  • Avoid traveling unless necessary. Roads may be dangerous.
  • Use heat sources safely and never use generators, grills or charcoal-burning appliances indoors. Open a window slightly to provide ventilation.

After the storm, check on your neighbors – especially elderly or vulnerable neighbors – who may need assistance and volunteer your time and skills, if possible.

Connecticut is expanding residents’ access to affordable, high-speed internet, devices, and training.

The state’s draft digital equity plan – as well as executive summaries available in English and Spanish – have been published online at ct.gov/DigitalEquity.

This release begins a 30-day public comment period, during which residents can submit their feedback through that website, by emailing DigitalEquity@ct.gov, or by calling the State Digital Equity comment line at (860) 622-2032.
