As Vice Chair of the Select Committee on Special Education — and as a public school teacher who works with students with special needs — I’m proud to report that the House unanimously passed HB 5001, a bipartisan reform bill that makes historic investments in special education and gives schools the tools they need to better serve every student.

This comprehensive legislation includes $30 million for a new special education grant program, fully funds the high-cost reimbursement grant at a record $221 million, adds $10 million in competitive grants, and expands access to services like developmental screenings, behavioral support, and remedial college courses. It also reins in costs and increases transparency through new standards for private providers, billing reforms, and stronger oversight of outplacements. Read the press release linked HERE for more details.

For too long, our special education system has faced serious challenges. This bill brings meaningful change, and I was proud to support it on the House floor. I look forward to seeing it pass the Senate and be signed into law.

Please continue reading below for other noteworthy items, and thanks as always for taking the time to read them!

Honoring Heroes

Thank you to all who attended the annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony that took place afterward on the steps of the American Legion Kiltonic Post 72. It was an honor to march in the parade and a privilege to be invited by the Legion to speak at the event.

Your presence was a powerful reminder of the strength and unity of our community. By showing up, you helped honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Whether you marched, stood along the route, brought your family, or joined us in reflection at the ceremony, your participation meant a great deal. Together, we remembered, gave thanks, and modeled for the younger generation in attendance why we must never forget the cost of our freedom.

Whalers Legacy Celebrated at the Capitol

This week, the CT State Capitol turned green and blue as lawmakers, fans, and hockey legends gathered to celebrate 50 years since the Hartford Whalers' first game in Connecticut.

In the House Chamber, legislators led the tribute, honoring the team’s enduring impact on the state. Former Whaler Bob Crawford (1983–86) shared memories from his time on the ice, and Jan Cummings-Good was recognized for designing the iconic Whalers logo. Pat Pickens, producer of the new documentary The Whalers, was also acknowledged for the film that’s bringing renewed attention to a team that “refused to die.”

The message was clear: The Whalers' spirit still lives strong in Connecticut. 🐳

Espresso & Engineering

In between votes at the Capitol this week, I had the chance to meet with representatives from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). We had a great conversation about how they’re working to select the most qualified firms for transportation projects, ensure smart use of public funds, and tackle the enormous task of rebuilding our aging infrastructure.

What stood out most was their strong commitment to workforce development and STEM education — efforts that are inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in engineering, with hopes of addressing the workforce shortage in this important sector.

As a bonus, I was proud to connect with my cousin, Steve Drechsler, who serves as Board President of ACEC-Connecticut. It’s always a good day when policy and family intersect!

Street Takeovers

The House of Representatives passed SB 1284 on Wednesday — a major step forward in keeping our roads safe. House Democrats led the charge in voting to authorize steep fines, vehicle seizures, and automatic license suspensions for those involved in dangerous and illegal street takeovers and ATV activity. This legislation targets both participants and organizers, ensuring tougher enforcement and stronger penalties to stop reckless behavior in its tracks. Public safety comes first. With SB 1284, we’re putting an end to chaos on our streets and sending a clear message: this kind of lawlessness won’t be tolerated. I am proud to be part of the effort to keep our communities safe.

Artful Expressions

Tomorrow, Saturday, May 31, from 2 to 4 p.m., Calendar House members, friends, and family are warmly invited to a special exhibit showcasing the creative talents of Calendar House groups and students. Enjoy a vibrant display of artwork, fiber art, stained glass, and poetry, and celebrate the creativity and community spirit that make Calendar House so special!

Bottles for Bread

On June 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. a Bottle and Can Drive will be held to benefit Bread for Life’s Summer Lunch Program, which prepares and bags over 5,000 lunches for children during the summer break. Funds raised from the drive will go toward purchasing essential items like snacks, water, and sandwich ingredients to help ensure no child goes hungry while school is out. Every bottle, can, and contribution helps make a meaningful impact in the lives of local children. Thank you for your support!

CPR and First Aid

Join the South Central Health District on June 11 from 6-8 p.m. for an exciting and interactive classroom experience designed for students in grades 5–8!  Participants will learn the lifesaving skill of hands-only CPR, how to use an AED, and basic first aid—all in a supportive, age-appropriate environment. Early CPR training builds confidence, encourages a culture of preparedness, and helps reduce anxiety in emergency situations. This is a great opportunity for young people to gain valuable skills that could save lives. Don’t miss this chance to empower the next generation of lifesavers! Register by clicking HERE.
