Dear Neighbor,

This week, I had the privilege to attend the 2024 Southington High School Wall of Honor ceremony and pay tribute to the new class of inductees and their families. The ceremony was beautiful, and I am in awe of the service and accomplishments of this year’s class, which included Valerie DePaolo, Kenneth DiMauro (posthumously inducted), Mark Palmieri, TFC Aaron Pelletier (posthumously inducted) and Norman VanCor.

Please continue reading below for other noteworthy items, and thanks as always for taking the time to read them!

Dinner Under the Stars

What a terrific night at Southington Community Cultural Arts’ (SoCCA) annual Dinner Under the Stars. It was great to meet so many new people, catch up with old friends, and most importantly support the arts in our town. Thank you to all the sponsors and local restaurants who made this community event a great success. I am proud to support the arts in Southington.

Encouraging Returns from CT Pension Funds

Connecticut achieved an 11.5% return on its pension investments last fiscal year, ranking in the top 25% of large public pension funds nationwide, according to State Treasurer Erick Russell.

The investment gains, along with approximately $1.9 billion from the budget surplus to address unfunded obligations, resulted in a $6.7 billion increase in Connecticut’s pension funds.

The continued improvement in Connecticut’s pension fund performance guards against the impact of future down markets and accelerates the speed at which we can pay down legacy pension debt inherited by the current generation of Connecticut taxpayers.

Annual Costume Exchange

Check out the second annual Costume Exchange at the Southington Public Library on Saturday, September 28 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. This is a drop-in event and requires no registration.

Come take a look at gently used options before committing to a costume this year.

While donations are more than welcome, they are not required to attend. Costumes for all ages including adults will be available. Don't miss out on the fun!

This program would not be possible without an enormous amount of help from Southington Community Services (SCS).

Harvesting History

On Saturday, September 28 from 12-2 p.m., explore the fascinating past of the Lewis Educational Agricultural Farm (LEAF), a site that has been a farm since the 1700s, with "Harvesting History" presented by The Barnes Museum and Southington Open Space Commission. The program includes a short presentation by Barnes Museum Curator Christina Volpe on the history of the farm's building on Blueberry Lane, followed by family insights and a farm tour led by Mark Ramsey.

Registration is required for this event, and there is a capacity limit of 50 people. There is also a suggested donation of $10. All proceeds support LEAF’s efforts to provide fresh farm-to-table produce and educational opportunities for the community!
