Abbott Terrace Shutting Down in November

October 28, 2024

Despite our best efforts, the Abbott Terrace Health Center in Waterbury is moving forward with plans to close in November. I join the community in urging the state to keep the nursing home open with a new operator. The facility lost its Medicare and Medicaid funding because Athena Health Care did not meet basic health and safety requirements.
The closure of Abbott Terrace is a devastating blow to our community because it affects residents, their families, and dedicated staff. The transition to a new nursing home will require residents to acclimate to a different environment. They will have to navigate new layouts, policies, and schedules. This will be a challenge and can be overwhelming, particularly for those who may already be dealing with health issues.

In addition, saying goodbye to caregivers, who have become like family, will be very difficult. Many residents have formed deep, meaningful relationships with their caretakers, who have provided not only medical support but also companionship during difficult times. The bonds create a sense of trust and security that will be hard to replicate in a new facility.

We also want Abbott Terrace to remain open to save approximately 300 jobs that are crucial for the overall health and stability of our community. Losing their jobs would ripple through Waterbury, affecting families and local economies.

Finally, the move will also be a major disruption for loved ones who have established a routine around these visits. Moving a patient just a few miles can be the difference between visiting once a day, week, or month for those without a car. Public transportation options may be limited, and the added travel time and costs can turn what was once a simple trip into a significant undertaking.

I will continue working with the state and local employees to save Abbott Terrace.
