Extension to Cold Weather Protocol

If you have taken one step outside over the past few days, you know just how dangerously cold it has been. Even though our neighbors in Waterbury have already dug out from nearly 20 inches of snow, icy conditions continue to make travel difficult and dangerous. In response, the governor has extended the state's Severe Cold Weather Protocol until noon on Thursday, February 5, marking the longest activation of this protocol in more than a decade.

Forecasts now show that bitterly cold weather will persist even longer than expected, with well below normal temperatures continuing into the middle of next week. Overnight lows over the next 10 days are projected to fall into the single digits with several nights dipping below zero.

During the protocol, warming centers are welcoming those in need and providing relief from the cold. They include:

The Salvation Army at 74 Central Avenue

  • Open 24 hours per day

St. Vincent de Paul Mission Shelter at 114 Benedict Street

  • Open 24 hours per day

Center for Human Development Hospitality Center at 690 East Main Street

  • Open from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Waterbury Senior Center at 1985 Main Street

  • Available for seniors from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday)

If you need a warm place to stay, visit 211ct.org or call 2-1-1 to find available locations. Transportation can be provided if necessary.

Conversation on Public Safety and Immigration

I was proud to join advocates, nonprofit leaders, and community members for an important conversation on public safety in the wake of troubling federal immigration crackdowns happening across the country. The discussion at Albertus Magnus College focused on how our communities can remain safe, welcoming, and united while ensuring that every individual is treated with fairness and respect, regardless of immigration status.

We examined different policies that build trust between the community and law enforcement, protect due process, and ensure families can live without fear. Public safety is strongest when everyone feels secure in their communities.

These conversations must lead to meaningful action that upholds dignity, protects human rights, and creates communities where all residents, including our undocumented neighbors, can live safely and contribute to our society.
