Major Revitalization Projects Funded!

December 10, 2024

Our city is getting significant help to bring new life to a pair of vacant properties. These projects will open up new affordable housing and create a new children's play area. Please read below to learn more about these exciting revitalization projects.

I am honored to serve another term as a Deputy Speaker Pro-Tempore in the House of Representatives. Keep scrolling for a breakdown of why this role is important.

It is going to take a little longer to get to your destination if you take I-84 westbound in Waterbury. I'll let you know when to expect a lane closure for bridge work.

Waterbury Revitalization Investments
The state is pouring in just over $700,000 into Waterbury to revitalize two vacant properties in our city. The projects are designed to develop affordable housing and establish a new safe area for children to play after school. The state grants were allocated by the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development’s Brownfield Remediation and Development Program.
The Connecticut Brownfield Land Bank will receive $150,320 to assess the William V. Begg Building site on Bank Street in the 75th district. The organization plans to use the money to return the high-rise to affordable housing. The building has been vacant for more than 10 years.

The Waterbury Development Corporation will receive $550,000 to remediate the property below at 9 & 15 Branch Street. The cleanup will enable crews to build a splash pad and playground for the Police Activity League. This important work fosters a positive relationship between our law enforcement and the greater community.

In total, the state approved $20 million to cleanup and redevelop 21 blighted properties across the state. This includes 150 acres of contaminated land in 18 municipalities.

Deputy Speaker of the House Pro-Tempore
House Speaker Matt Ritter re-appointed me as a Deputy Speaker of the House Pro-Tempore. This will be my second full term as part of the House leadership team. When the Speaker of the House is absent from the chamber, the Deputy Speaker presides over the House of Representatives.

Speaker Ritter said, “I have a great team of leaders to help me run the House Chamber. Deputy Speakers spend long hours on the dais overseeing debate. They have to be fair while keeping the flow of business moving.”

I would like to thank Speaker Ritter for the opportunity to continue serving on his leadership team. This is a responsibility I take very seriously as I challenge myself to grow professionally and personally. Congratulations to all the Deputy Speakers and all the other members of the team.
