Puerto Rican Forum Helps Shape Our Policies

January 21, 2025
I joined several of my colleagues on the Puerto Rican & Latino Caucus to discuss policy issues and possible solutions with constituents to help Puerto Ricans in Connecticut. We broke down several topics related to the economic, social, and political issues affecting Puerto Ricans in Connecticut. It was a pleasure to participate in a forum designed to develop a collective agenda that takes Puerto Rican experiences into perspective.
The latest U.S. census shows that Puerto Ricans represent 8.2% of Connecticut’s total population yet, according to the Puerto Rican Studies Initiative at UConn, we consistently experience the highest inequalities among all racial and ethnic groups in the state, including compared to other Latinos. Ultimately, the goal of the summit is to create public policies and legislation that will address inequalities affecting Puerto Ricans in our state.
The Puerto Rican & Latino Caucus is committed to turning the meaningful conversations from our forum into tangible action. We will take your insights, concerns, and ideas back to our respective committees, where we will share our policy priorities and legislative agenda.
Our goal is to craft, draft, and pass legislation that addresses the unique challenges faced by Puerto Rican and Latino communities while also benefiting the broader population of Connecticut. By focusing on initiatives that improve education, healthcare, housing, economic opportunities, and overall equity, we aim to enhance the quality of life for Puerto Ricans in Connecticut.
