School Renamed After Baseball Legend Roberto Clemente

October 9, 2024
It was an extraordinary honor to make history and unveil the new sign renaming a local school after a prominent Hispanic American for the first time in Waterbury. The Roberto Clemente International Dual Language School is the first in our city to bear the name of the legendary Puerto Rican baseball player, humanitarian, and civil rights activist.
School renamed to Roberto Clemente International Dual Language School.
This renaming not only celebrates his extraordinary contributions to sports but also highlights his commitment to community, equality, and education. The Roberto Clemente International Dual Language School will continue his legacy by promoting bilingualism, cultural diversity, and academic excellence for future generations of students in Waterbury.
Students put on a show before the sign ceremony, and the young man pictured below did an amazing job playing the role of Roberto Clemente.

I am grateful for the outpouring of support in our efforts to name a school after Roberto Clemente. Your advocacy and passion has been heard, and it’s especially important to promote Hispanic Americans in a city where more than 60% of the student population is of Hispanic descent. Our children need to be reminded and inspired by successful people who look like them. Clemente was a spokesman for people of color and having his name on a school in Waterbury promotes equality and inclusivity.
