Just 1,337 words changed the course of a nation and its people.

On July 4, Mayor Roberto Alves and the Upward Bound students delivered a moving reading of the Declaration of Independence at First Congregational Church, bringing those timeless words to life as we celebrate America's 250th anniversary.

The Mad Hatter Chorus performed beautifully, and Mayor Alves spoke about the profound significance of this milestone for him, our city, our state, and our nation.

A special thank you to our outstanding City Historian, Brigid Guertin and the Danbury Museum & Historical Society for organizing this inspiring event and an incredible lineup of 47 events commemorating America's Semiquincentennial.

Thank you as well to Bob Botelho and the First Congregational Church for opening their doors and welcoming the community. At 2:50 p.m. the bells rang out 13 times marking the poignant moment.

As we celebrate 250 years of American independence, we honor not only our history but also the generations who have worked to make our nation stronger, freer, and more just. The Mayor’s special recognition of our veterans was moving for all.

In addition, I took part in one of my favorite Fourth of July traditions! Always a great time at the New Fairfield Independence Day Parade. I started attending more than 15 years, going all the way back to my banking days, and I truly appreciate First Selectwoman Pat DelMonaco for the invitation this year.

Kids waving flags, families lining the streets, and neighbors coming together to celebrate 250 years of this American experiment. 🇺🇸

Congratulations again to New Fairfield's Baseball State Champions! Great to say hello to the Pardalis’ and it was wonderful catching up with my customer from the bank, Bill Lewis, and watching his grandson proudly lead the Celtic Cross Pipes & Drums.

Happy Independence Day, and God Bless America!

Another Independence Day tradition:  Team America’s annual picture (the 10th!) on a special 250th 4th of July!

It was a little bittersweet, however, as I was missing my little girl, who was overseas.

Storm Damage Update

On a far less celebratory note, I unfortunately, spent a portion of July 5 driving throughout the 109th District checking in on residents and assessing storm damage (video here).

We worked hard with Eversource and, while there are still remnants from the storm, I'm relieved that power was restored to Danbury residents in less time than was originally reported.

I'm also equally pleased and proud of the Danbury community for continuing to look out for, and help, one another.

Disability Pride Month

Accessibility is not a favor; it is a fundamental human right. Creating a more inclusive world benefits everyone. House Democrats will continue to push down barriers and demand equity every day!

Starting the Day Right

Is there a better guy than Sonny? I don't think so.

I started the day with breakfast at Sonny Side Up with a good friend, and as always, you can’t ever finish the plate! The food is outstanding, but it's Sonny and Diane who keep people coming back. Two of the nicest people you'll ever meet and true Danbury gems.

If you haven't been yet, what are you waiting for?

Who’s joining me there for breakfast?

Not the Results We We Hoped....

Sigh. OK, so my three favorite teams -- U.S., Brazil and Portugal -- didn't get past the Round of 16 (it was a rough, rough week). But journey has been amazing, and the U.S. is still a host nation to one of the biggest sporting events in the world. There's still plenty of excellent futbol to be played, even if there's no Pulisic, Ronaldo or Neymar.

Here's to the beautiful game being watched in Danbury and beyond. Let's continue the celebration!

(Some photos below from recent U.S. and Portugal watch parties during happier times -- victories for both teams in the Round of 32.)

As always, if you have any comments, questions or concerns, please reach out to my office.

Sincerely,

Farley Santos
